The Parish of the Immaculate Conception keeps an image of Saint Francis of Assisi that, every October 4, receives hundreds of pilgrims who arrive on foot from the lowlands. It is the feast that defines the town's religious year.
The climb
The pilgrimage is no stroll: it passes through the Ogarrio Tunnel and the mountain grades, above 2,700 meters above sea level. Elderly people and whole families make the journey; the town breathes a mix of fair, faith and cold.
How to experience it
- Book weeks ahead. Lodging in town is limited and that weekend it fills up.
- Arrive early. The tunnel access gets congested; the line of cars starts before noon.
- Bring real warm clothing. October already brings cold nights at altitude.
- Respect the celebration. Mass and the procession are acts of faith, not a show: camera away inside the church.
If you can't make it in October
The town is visited year-round and the parish is open daily. Other dates with a life of their own: the Wixárika pilgrimage at Easter and the quiet spring weekends, the best for walking the town unhurried.
