A town at altitude: cold at night almost all year

Real de Catorce sits over 2,700 meters above sea level. The day can be warm and the night freezing, even in summer: your backpack always carries one extra layer.

Weather: the golden rule is layers

The town and its surroundings sit on the San Luis Potosí high plateau, with elevations nearing 3,000 meters. The temperature swing is strong: after a sunny noon in the Main Square, night falls with real cold. For horseback rides and 4x4 tours bring a jacket, a hat and sunscreen: high-desert sun burns just as it chills.

Dates worth the trip

  • October 4 — Saint Francis of Assisi. The image venerated at the Parish of the Immaculate Conception receives hundreds of pilgrims who climb up to town. A unique atmosphere, but the town fills up: book ahead.
  • Easter — the Wixárika pilgrimage. Every year, pilgrims of the Wixárika people cross the region toward Wirikuta, their sacred territory. It is a moment of deep religious meaning: witnessing it demands respect and distance.
  • Any weekend. Outside peak dates the town keeps its calm: ideal for walking it, catching air at the Palenque and eating unhurried.
